Cure for Boredom
77Are you looking for a cure for boredom? Do I hear the silent scream? “I’m bored, help!”
Confession Time: I will profess that there have been moments in my life when I am bored to death. I find myself wearing the boredom cloak, its soothingly familiar feel on my skin often makes me want to curl up on the bed, yawning and determined not to do anything about it. I moan and complain, “I’m bored.” When my best friend begins to suggest the things we can do together, I would reply: “But I’m bored. I don’t like to do anything.” “You’re bored or tired?” She would ask exasperatedly. She decides to leave me alone. It’s hopeless talking to a bored person who doesn’t want to remove the boredom cloak.
Are you feeling this way right now? If you are, then you must decide. Will you remove your boredom cloak so you can be open enough to see what exciting things there are in store for you? If yes, read on. If no, just bookmark this page and come back when you are ready. Deal?
If your answer is yes, then you’ve come to the right place and the right time. Here are different ways to help you cure your boredom.
Identify the main reason why you are bored.
- Is your boredom caused by the fact that everything that you are doing has become a routine? A boring routine that is making life seemingly dull and monotonous?
- Is your relationship with your significant other dry and unexciting? Romance has seem to have fled out of the window?
- Are you feeling lonely and alone?
- Is your life without meaning and passion? Do you feel empty and restless, looking for something more?

Bored with routine?
Day in, day out, we do the things we need to do –doing household chores, taking care of the family, doing the stuff in our workplace, and suddenly we find ourselves feeling bored.
Learn something new. It is human nature to be constantly growing. If you feel that you have stopped growing, your internal clock flashes out a signal. Bored…bored…bored! It’s time to learn something new.
Find a hobby. A hobby can be defined as “an activity or interest pursued outside one's regular occupation and engaged in primarily for pleasure.” Who says mommy can’t learn ballroom dancing or sky diving right? And daddy can learn cooking or scrapbooking too. The most important thing is that you are doing this activity with pleasure. And if it brings you pleasure, you will be out of your boredom soon enough.
Do things differently. Well, if you are not in a mood to learn something new or take up a hobby, I would suggest just doing the routine, mundane things differently and it will zest up your life. I remember a story of a bagger in a grocery store who wanted to brighten up their customers. He began typing on small pieces of paper inspirational quotes. When he would place your stuff inside a bag, he’d stuff a piece of quote too. He was a hit. The customers began lining up on their counter because they wanted that paper too. Be creative. Try to do something differently today.
Hobby Ideas
Here are some of the hobby ideas you can choose from:
- Outdoor recreation - engaging in games like billiards, card games, chess, table tennis, poker; or sports such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, climbing, sky diving, fishing, ice skating, biking, swimming, other watersports and snowsports
- Creative hobbies - photography, jewelry making, arts and crafts, moving making, singing, juggling, performing or acting, doing magic tricks
- Learn to play a musical instrument - guitar, piano or keyboard, flute, harmonica, drums or even composing songs
- Get moving to the beat - learn to dance the cha cha, boogie, tango, waltz, swing, break dancing or your native dance
- Kitchen Stuff - cooking, baking, decorating a cake, making of chocolates, concocting meals and drinks, bartending, making sushi
- Collecting -- stamps, comic books, antiques, coins
Dull and unexciting relationships?
So you’ve been married for what seems like ages or you find yourself bored with the company you keep. Get out of the rut and boredom by doing the following things.
- Surprise each other.
- Find something new to do together.
- Show your appreciation.
- Express your love in a unique way.
Do you know a simple gesture of preparing a lovely, romantic meal or going on a date can change the mood drastically? And when you express your appreciation with a surprise? I tell you it will bring the good feelings right away. Friends can also decide to do new things together instead of the usual activity that you are engaged in.
Feeling lonely?
Maybe you are saying you are bored when in reality you are actually feeling lonely. If you are feeling this way...
- Reconnect with friends
- Have a small reunion
- Go out of your way to help someone
- Reach out to someone
I discover that when I'm feeling lonely, reaching out to another soul helps me a lot. I attend a prayer meeting, join a club, or have a heart to heart talk with another and it lifts me up a lot. Giving of yourself can definitely cure boredom most esp. when the reason is loneliness.
Feeling empty and restless?
I remember there was a certain point in my life, when I wanted to scream at the papers that I needed to do for the school. I recognized that I was bored but the feelings of boredom were becoming chronic, so to speak. It was then I discovered that underneath the boredom was the feeling of restlessness. I didn’t like doing paper works. I miss interacting with people. The discovery of my healing gift and passion for the performing arts helped me get out of the rut into a much better place.
- Meditate and do soul searching. What do you want out of your life?
- Find your passion, if you still don’t know what you want.
- Rekindle your passion. We have to nurture and nourish our passion to keep the fires burning.
- Laugh your way out of boredom. Laughter is still the best medicine. Joy for life and for the things you do brings you into a happier space where boredom cannot help but flee.
One last note:
If you are bored, see it as an opportunity to discover where you are at this point in your life. It may just be what you need to take the necessary steps to moving forward and onward. It may be a time for you to pause and add spice to whatever you are doing or to nourish yourself and your relationships. The cure for boredom lies within you. Keep allowing the beauty in you to shine.

If I ever feel bored I´ll know were to come :)
Hey Michelle, it´s always great to read your hubs. Thankfully I´ve been able to write some this couple of days and it felt great to be here at HP again :)
ps: if you ever get bored again please give me a call ;)
Great HUB ripplemaker. I know what to do when Im bored now. Keep up the good work.
Great hub with a lot of good suggestions. Now you need to write one for teenagers! I like others have such a full life as a teacher and finishing up my book "Heroes All Around Us" that I do not have time for boredom but I will table this wonderful hub fir the days in the future when I do.
this arrives just in time. After my accident I have been feeling bored as I am so limited in the things I can do. It feels sometimes that my whole life is in standby :(
I am glad I stopped here, a cheery hub that reminded me that my boredom is only temporary and soon I'll be back enjoying myself.
A good hub ripplemaker. Not easy to do when you are "wearing your boredom cloak" as you say.
I am going to bookmark this one and then try to figure out how to find it once I have. LOL
Nice article, Michelle.
You write very well and I love how you include your personal relections and insights. Thanks for the ripples.
Theo
The last time I was truly bored was back during my master's degree in education. I value the things I learned in that program, but reading those theory texts was just so boring for me. I think that was a sign as to why I was not supposed to be a full time teacher. Most teachers though that love their job say the theory texts they assign never really teach much. Personally I think most talented teachers already know from the heart, like you :).
awesome hub and so true. I don't have much time to be bored but when I am I write.
hugs
dori
You choose nice topics, nice pictures and ideas. Your hubs are Pleasure.
Perhaps one can add one more idea - to get rid of getting bored.
Just try to enjoy yourself, way you are, the situation you are in, what ever be it. Even try to enjoy in detached manner hard times you face.
Each hard occasion ends in good times and often when you are in best of your mood suddenly every thing starts going wrong. So it is a never ending game. Once you take it in that spirit, one can enjoy most moments and not get bored.
That should be by and large enough for not getting bored almost any time.
Actually you also do say the same thing in your nice last sentence "Keep allowing the beauty in you to shine."
lovely hub no need tobe ever bored again
I don't think I can ever be bored. I have too much writing to do and too much writing to submit! And besides that, there are still about a thousand books I still want to read! Thanks Michelle. It was great hearing from you.
I'm surely NOT bored reading your hub! Great ideas for pulling yourself out of the doldrums. Love your writing style.
ripplemaker,
Making new ripples of excitement, removing the cloak for those who are ready. Boredom has never really been a visitor in my life experience, I love spice and flavor! Excitement can be found in the simplest things as you so aptly presented. I really enjoyed all of the cute pictorials, that alone can cure boredom. Thanks for an uplifting experience this morning. :)
If I see something I'd like to learn more about, I buy a book on the topic and even if I'm too busy to sit down and read it right away, there comes a point when I have free time to read it and there are also plenty of great articles on the hubpages if I don't want to go out and buy a new book!
I am never bored. I have plenty that keeps me busy. Especially stuff to worry about!
Wow, one of my favorite hubs here,Thanks a lot!
Wonderful hub! I actually am rarely if ever bored. However, it's always nice reading your hubs. I love your writing style!
I Love your hub Ripplemaker.its full of great remedies for boredom.Boredom is a general problem.each one of us suffer from one kind or another and at time we become frustrated because we dont know how to deal with each type. Thanks for the tips.when i feel bored i usually go for sport ,listen to music or visit friends.
stay blessed.
When I look at the critters in the park, they are never bored; they run, they play, the eat, chase each other and this is because they are in the flow, and in alignment with the perfection of the universe, we humans are not (usually). I think once one is in the flow- our passion gets awakened and expressed.
As usual, you have some nifty ideas- I have been learning Tai Chi, did my first two moves last night, not Youtube material yet. hehe.
This is perfectly and nicely put! I sometimes feel bored of everything, and can't do anything... I even feel bored of all the outdoor or indoor activites, and definitely, don't want to see anyone. I think it is funny right? :) but what feels right about your bunch of advice is that I should "Do things differently" this is the core and the remedy... Thanks Ate.
Beautiful Hub, Michelle. I cannot stand boredom (it can be the worst nightmare, it is so sticky and foggy feeling) - CREATIVITY is only way our for it.
I am almost never bored, for me boredom is suffering and wasting the time...and I prefer to enjoy my life, as much as possible.
You have given here all important advices, how to be creative, so there is nothing more to add.... Thumbs up! A lots of love.
Michelle: WhoooOoO, you and Daisy are encouraging me to write my book. LOL! I will be sure to purchase a book from both of you!
I like Tatjana's comments on creativity, how true, how true; creativity is the way out of boredom because it puts one in the zone/flow. My sister paints and can't wait to get up on the next day to finish her painting, that's passion.
Well Michelle I tried to take up Golf again and I had a revelation . I STINK AT IT !!! I guess I will have to discover some other exciting outlet . Maybe wrestling alligators .
I'm seldom bored--there's always a hub to write or something will crop up that actually fill up my day and i wonder where did time go? But you have good suggestions to cure boredom, so I know what to do when I'm bored.
Thanks for sharing.
Boredom. If boredom is evident then there is something missing somewhere. Are we doing all we can to be busy and productive. After all waste of time is also purely a waste of time. There is so much to do and say anyway. Are we active enough. Sitting on a couch all day is not an answer. Or looking out the window at work is not an answer. Our system works better when we are interested, busy and hopeful in what we are doing.
Yes keeping busy can surely keep that 'old devil' boredom away.
Thank-you!!
I gave up the "boredom cloak" a long time ago. I guess you could say, I wore it enough when I was younger that I now can recognize when it comes to visit. The difference is I know better than to let it in. Many great ideas in your hub for those who are bored or not! I have been so busy lately but needed to come by to say hello. Hi Michelle :) I will always let you in, hehe.
I've heard you mention the book and joking with VioletSun, what will your book be called? I think I've read that somewhere but don't recall. Writing a book sounds so exciting Sis and it will truly keep you busy. No boredom for you for awhile. Hugs to you for a new venture!
Awesome post. Thank you so much... I love the "hobbies" pictures.
In a relationship that is in a rut it is crucial for the couple to get out and try to experience new things. One of my friends has completely given up on her ex, but I wish she would reconsider because he is a really good guy. I think he is hurting inside because of the way the relationship ended, and I think she is looking for something in others she will not find because it is already there in him. I hate to think those things, but I think if they would just try to reconnect they might be able to work things out.
it's routine that makes me bored most of the time. the need to break the monotony landed me into the world of blogging and writing for spaces such as hubpages and the others.
it's nice to be here reading your hubs.
Hi Ripplemaker,
I hope so too. thanks for the encouragement :).
VERY interesting hub ! Keep up the good work !
I was bored and came to this?! Thanks for the suggestion.
Hi ya Rip. I ain't never bored. Haven't seen ya in awhile.

Great info! I confess, I am a victim of boredom more so than I could ever need to be.
Thank you for this.
I love this, thanks!

THANKS xxx
great thanks really helped
I agree with a lot of these people! Get a hobby! For instance, I love playing pool. I play a lot at the bars but owning a pool table has improved my game tremendously and it is a great way for me to pass the time with friends.
how fun it is
i need to search too DX but i think one step is to get someone you really have fun with but they are mean to you, just get them to annoy you then you have a talking subject.
Great article. Very thorough list of what to do instead. You might be interested in my article that also talks about the cure for boredom:http://www.allowyourlighttoshine.com/mind/what-is-
keep up the good work.

nothing lessen my restlessness exept prayer
Thanks! Boredom is extremely problematic when considering the lack of legitimate problem solving. Today, video games control the minds of America's youth.

P.S It's so much harder when your young.
Hi Michelle,
I am rarely bored and if the usual day to day activities are becoming routine, it is so easy to mix it up and engage in something different at least for a while. You have offered great suggestions in this hub. Up and useful votes.
