Say Yes to Life with a Grateful Heart
72
New years are new beginnings. What a better way to start it by saying “Yes to Life!” And I believe the best way to saying yes to life is to be grateful for everything and everyone in it.
Gulp. Does it have to be everything and everyone…all of the things and people in our lives? That seems to be pretty tough. No way! How about those times when someone you love betrayed, abused, deceived and lied to you? Or how about those times when we faced challenging moments of financial crisis, emotional turmoil, separation and loss of a loved one or the difficulty of having physical ailments, cancer and the list goes on. Do I have to be grateful for that too?
The answer remains the same. Yes!
Allow me to share with you a true story.
Several years ago, a sixty year old man with twinkling eyes arrived in the doorway of our learning center. We were so used to students with heights below our waist level that this was a surprise, albeit a pleasant one. He asked if we have a one on one program where he could study and improve his English speaking skills. Curious, I asked why he wanted to do this and what it was intended for.
I smiled as he confessed sheepishly. “I am a businessman and well, I just want to learn how to speak English well. Am I too old for this?”
“Why no?!” I exclaimed. “Nobody is ever too old for anything. To tell you frankly, I admire you for doing this.”
He must have sensed my sincerity for he grew quiet and told me something more. He shared that a month ago, his doctor announced to him that he had liver cancer. He remembered how stunned he was as he walked out of the clinic in a dazed state.
When he was outside, he found himself looking up at the sky. “It was such a beautiful day. The sun was shining and I was amazed at how blue the sky was. And there were so many white clouds all around. And right then and there, I just realized how busy I was with my business that I had totally forgotten to appreciate the things around me. Do you know that was the first time, after a very long time, I recall taking the time to look at the sky and appreciating it?”
A Good Day
He was scheduled for an operation but before all of that he turned over his business to his partner and decided he was going to spend the rest of his life living. One of the things he wanted to do was learn English and thus, for some unknown reason made his way into our lives.
For a month, he came. He shared. He learned. We all grew. When it was his last day of his month long program, he brought some food for us as a thank you gift. I remember the bittersweet feelings of the pain of not knowing how long he had to live and yet the joy of having found himself and able to enjoy and live life truly.
I remember him vividly up to now because he brought into my awareness that saying yes to life is to be grateful for who I am and for all my experiences that taught me to be a better person. And how could I ever forget this sixty year old man whose enrollment form bore the name of Angel?
Say Yes to Life by Expressing Your Gratitude
- Every morning when you wake up thank God that you are alive and you have a new day to live.
- Show your appreciation to the people who have made a difference in your life. Write a letter. Give a gift. Express it in a hug. Say “thank you.” Tell them what they did or who they are that has touched you.
- Allow yourself to show delight and gratitude. Stretch those facial muscles into a beautiful smile, skip and dance if you want to, shout with glee, break into a hearty laughter. Allow..allow…allow!
I can not stop being grateful for all the moments someone comes up to you as they express a word of thanks. It has made all the gloomy days bright and brings a large amount of inspiration.
Say Yes to Life by Recognizing the Blessing in Every Situation
- Know and believe that in each situation and challenge that comes our way, there is a blessing. You may not see it immediately but trust in the process of life's unfolding.
- When tough times come, say thank you instead of grumbling and complaining. This puts you in a state of awareness that brings in the wisdom and the courage to respond in a better way.
- Recognizing the blessing in each situation will bring more peace and contentment in your life.

Say Yes to Life with Gratitude Affirmations
I am so grateful to be alive.
I am so grateful for all the experiences that has made my life into what it is today.
I am so grateful for all the people who have taught me and brought out of me all the good qualities that I have.
I am so grateful to have a consciousness.
I am so grateful for every gift, skill, talent and ability that I could use to improve my life.
I am so grateful that I have the power to choose.
I am so grateful to think and feel.
I am so grateful to the Divine for giving me each brand new day to live a full life – a life of joy, peace, love and abundance.
I am so grateful knowing that each time I plant the seeds of gratitude, I know that they are blooming and growing constantly.
I am so grateful, ever so grateful, very grateful!
I am grateful for all that I have received and all that is yet to come!
Gratitude is a state of consciousness. A grateful heart declares to the Universe that everything is right and is in its proper place. It sees beyond the imperfections and acknowledges the perfection of things.
Say "Yes to Life" with a grateful heart and watch how beautiful life can be.

WOW!! Yes that is so true!! When death stares us that is when the meaning of life becomes clearer. It is sad that sometimes we need a rude awakening to appreciate the value of life. I also love Kahlil Gibran and his book "The Prophet" is one of my all time favorites. Also Brian Tracey's "eating frog" was a beautiful video I saw in Dayzeebee's hub. Another nice soul uplifting hub. Keep up the good work. Have a great weekend.
Gratitude is the key to leading a wonderfullife, for sure.
Michelle: I could literally see the 60 year old man appreciating the sky with a sense of wonder and deep gratitude when he knew he was approaching death. What a message for all of us! I was telling Phil (my partner) today that we are all going to die one day, and people fight over land, religions, some waste life by staying angry, etc, when we are all citizens of the universe, and we ARE all connected through our humanity and souls, yes even the terrorist far away from me. I am grateful for life, for the air that I breathe, and yes, even the times when things were challenging.
I am also grateful for this hub and the series of writings we have been getting lately from inspirational hubbers.
Hugs to you.
Thumbs up!
and it is so fun to see what shapes we can find in the beautiful white clouds in that blue sky...Life can be wonderful...if we allow it to be...I liked the video Good Day...was great...A touch, your smile, just your very presense can mean so much...Thanks sweetie...G-Ma :o) hugs & Peace
Thank you so much for your beautiful Hub! Your message found me right when I needed it, so thank you for being an answer to prayer!
Who better to remind us to say yes to life than our beloved Ripplemaker :). Your hubs always remind me of the cheery and thankful side of life, so thanks for the reminder. One thing I always like to look at is the shadows on the mountains and how deep blue the sky is against their peaks. When I used to talk about things like this with other people they thought it was boring I noticed those things, but I am glad to see many do. I think when we all slow down we notice these small, but great things in life.
Hi ripplemaker. Great hub, great subject that I live by since I am a 15 year cancer survivor. It's sad that it takes death to jumpstart us into gratitude mode, but I guess that's life. There is not a day that goes by that I do not forget that this may be my last since I am not cured. I changed very quickly after going through all of the emotions one has when faced with certain death. I finally resolved to forego dying, a silly notion on my part, and live. I became more tolerant of others and appreciative, sharing and caring. I started writing things down for my children and grandchildren so they would learn more about me.
Needless to say, it is great to be alive and I thank you for your hub as a reminder to me of this new day in my life, Today! I will live again.
Hi Ripplemaker and thanks for this--I'm reading it at seven in the morning and it is just a wonderful way to start my day. You reminded me once again to put a little"gratitude in my attitude"
Thanks for another wonderful, inspiring hub..
What a lovely story!
Thank you Michelle for this Hub. It filled my heart with happiness...and gratitude. And with golden light of healing energies, he, he. To read the articles of healers is great: healing session is guaranteed, due to the hours spend in meditation and prayers...
A lots of Love & Light & Gratitude & Blessings....
This is a good story for people to know. Growth can come to us in unexpected ways. and, cancer patients sometimes go into remission when they take control of their lives in this way, so it can be a double blessing.
What a beautiful hub. My grandmother tought me to pray when I was a child, a prayer that always ended thanking God for al the good things in my little girl's life. As I grew older I forgot about it. A few months ago when my granny came to visit me I overheard her teaching the same prayer to my daughter who was thanking God for her family, her food and all the lovely things that had happened to her that day! It reminded me how busy I had become that I couldn't take a few minutes anymore to think about those things. Now, I have started again to thank God!
Lots of love to you.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
And thank you.
Jim
ripplemaker, you sweet precious thing you, now ya went an' made me blush. I don't do hat to often. Thank you dear, dam, my face is still burning. You did everyone a service by writing this.
That was beautiful
Hey Little Sis! Great hub (again!) there's a real power in gratitude, thanks for sharing that truth!
Ripplemaker,
I don't really know who you are or why you've come into my life but when I read one of your hubs, it is truely uplifting. I am grateful that you are "you" and that you spread joy here, and I'm sure, wherever you go. Hugs,
Madison
An excellent attitude and outlook on life Great job. Thumbs up
Such a touching story and I am grateful that you wrote this Hub and explained, through your words and the video, that tough question that we all ask (BUT do I have to be grateful for that Too?) And you so eloquently and honestly spoke through Winged Heart YES Sis Dottie you Do! Thank You my Dear, Thank You! Have a Good Day! Lots of Love and Hugs coming your Way :)
If you promise not to stop hubbing, I would be eternally grateful because you never fail to inspire with every hub you write. Again, thanks for sharing :D
May God bless you ALWAYS. Amen!
I like the old man story, and I agree: No one is ever to old to learn something.
Your title has recently become my life's mantra.
Reading your hub was so uplifting, I had to read it again. I do thank God for every day, and another chance to "get it right". Thank you.
Thank you, M'Lady.
Beautiful hub, Michelle. That story about Angel was so touching and inspirational. If he could be happy and grateful to be 'alive', then it should be easy for the rest of us. Thank-you for sharing his story with us.
I like that quote by Eckhart Tolle. So simple yet so so effective!
By the way, when I first arrived on this page, I saw that pic of you at the top and thought, "She just gets happier looking every time I see a new picture!" You are just so cute!
Thumbs up and hugs!
Thank you Universe for having Michelle around :)
Michelle, Dayzeebe: I had to come back here and share. The minute one let's go and say "Yes!" to life, the way opens up. The example I gave in my latest hub of releasing my grief-writing book project, and a major foundation emailed on the same day I published the hub, asking for permission to link my grief healing website to theirs, that's a blessing, I will get free traffic and help many.
There is more, :) I thought in passing a week ago or so that it would be cool to sell my menopause health website as I could use the money, and I am not selling anything, its filled with information I wrote, and I add Google adsense. I have no experience with selling domains or websites, so I forgot about it. Someone emailed two days ago, (email which I hadn't seen), liked the quality of my site, and wants to purchase my site, and give me a generous offer! I didn't even advertise or told anyone, except for Phil. I have to wait for my sister to come home later today from South America, so she can give me guidance on how to go about it. I am so GRATEFUL!
Hi VioletSun, Wow what great news! I love it when things come together and bless all those who are ready to accept all the blessings life and love offers! Like Ripplemaker I too am so excited for you. Go girl Go! Embrace the abundance that comes from saying YES! Hugs:)
Dayzeebee and Ripplemaker: :) I am going to keep my heart open and say "yes to life!". I fully understand this Truth, and its so cool to see the flow in action. I knew you ladies would celebrate with me! hehe. Thank you for this hub and both of you for being you.
I am grateful!
Hugs and more hugs!!! :)
hi
Thanks for cheering me up and inspiring me once again... The "bittersweet" feeling indeed...... of meeting a strange and struggling human being in this lifetime and yet full of gratitude, cares, hopes and love........
loads of love for you and Ms Daisy......... GOD bless you.........
Hi Ripplemaker. I am thankful to God Almighty for all that has manifested in my life. The good things as well as the bad things. These have taught me something or the other and the experience itself has enriched me in some way or the other. I appreciate your hub. Great article. I am grateful.
Excellent points you have made. It is OK to be happy & blissful in this life but we should also take time to share with others and express gratitude. I always like to say: Stop and smell those roses, notice their beauty, appreciate the happiness they bring and be sure to share that happiness with another living creature. Doing so will set the tone for others to follow!
Hi Ripplemaker,
I'm a new hubber, having just joined two days ago, and have just published my very first hub. When I checked it out on the site, I saw your hub in the section with other similar topic hubs. I was very inspired by your hub!
Being thankful even in life's not so good experiences is very difficult. Thanks for the reminder. I find that if I am thankful when things are not the way I like them, that somehow helps me accept things better. I figure that God knows what is best for me, and will certainly show me the way through my troubles. Thank you for sharing.
This is so awesome, Ripplemaker. What a heartfelt reflection to share as contributing to a lovley journey!
I SO BELIEVE THIS: Gratitude is a state of consciousness. A grateful heart declares to the Universe that everything is right and is in its proper place. It sees beyond the imperfections and acknowledges the perfection of things.
It is life changing and I see the awareness growing everyday! I am very grateful for arriving here! Thank you!
